LOUIS XVI STYLE STATUARY MARBLE FIREPLACE SURROUND

French, nineteenth century

An antique French fireplace surround in the Louis XVI style realised in the very best white Statuary marble, the shaped shelf above frieze carved in relief with ribbon tied laurel branches, the jambs headed by capitals of acanthus on three-quarter stop-fluted columns, the opening with generous double ingrounds.

  • Laurel leaf carving features prominently on fireplace surrounds from the Louis XVI period, being a symbol of honour and victory. The motif, like many other elements of architectural embellishment, was borrowed from classical antiquity.
